Is it worth hiring a social media marketing expert?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been managing my own social media for a couple of years now (mostly Instagram and TikTok), and while I’ve learned a ton, I’m starting to wonder if it might be time to bring in a social media marketing expert to help take things to the next level.

For those who’ve done it - was it actually worth it?

Did you see a real boost in engagement or sales, or did you end up realising it’s something you can still DIY with the right systems?

Maybe AI has changed the game?

Would love to hear both success stories and “wish I hadn’t” experiences!

@olivias I’ve wrestled with this one myself!

A couple of years ago, I tried hiring a freelance social media specialist to help promote my home & kitchen brand outside of Amazon. Honestly, the experience was mixed.

The good: she brought consistency. Posts went out like clockwork, captions were polished, and she introduced me to influencer micro-collabs I never would’ve found on my own.

The not-so-good: unless your SMM really understands your niche and products, the content can feel “off” - generic quotes and product shots that don’t drive much engagement or sales. I found myself spending almost as much time reviewing and tweaking as I did before.

My takeaway: if you already know your audience and have a clear content direction, hiring an expert can definitely free you up. But if you’re still finding your voice or testing offers, it might make more sense to stay hands-on for now - then bring someone in later to scale what’s working.

Curious what others think - especially if anyone’s found a sweet spot between DIY and full outsourcing.

Hey Olivia 👋 this is one for me!

I’ve been on both sides of this question, working as a social media manager by day and running my own small projects in the evenings. From what I’ve seen, it can be worth hiring someone, but only when you’re clear about what you need.

If you’re looking for strategy, content planning, or a complete brand revamp, an expert can save you months of trial and error. But if it’s just about posting more often or getting more likes, you might get better results by tightening your own systems first.

What really helps is hiring someone who understands your niche and your tone. I’ve worked with clients who wanted quick numbers and forgot about community. The best results always came from collaboration - when the creator still had a hand in the voice and story.

You already have personality in your content, so I’d say find support, not a replacement. Even a part-time content strategist or VA could help you scale without losing your vibe.

¡Salud!
