Sell Digital Products on Gumroad (with ideas)

So, other members have mentioned Gumroad occasionally, and I have never actually looked into it. Time to give it a try! Let's see how it actually works. Looks straightforward enough.

What you can sell

Downloads (PDF, ZIP, PNG, MP4, etc.), courses or files delivered over time, and memberships with tiers. There are built-in options for license keys (software), PDF stamping (ebooks), subscriptions, discount codes, and “pay-what-you-want.”

Getting set up

  1. Create an account and fill out payout settings (bank in supported countries or PayPal where bank isn’t available).

  2. Add a product, upload files, set price (fixed or PWYW - Pay What You Want), add a cover, and publish.

  3. Share your product link or your profile; optionally opt in to Discover for marketplace exposure.

Fees and marketplace cuts

  • Direct sales (your links/profile): 10% + $0.50 per transaction, plus processor fees if applicable.

  • Discover marketplace sales (Gumroad finds you a buyer): 30% all-in for that transaction.
No monthly platform fee. Read the fine print before you start grumbling about “hidden” costs.

Payouts

  • Minimum balance is usually $10.

  • You can choose daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly in many regions; US creators with a history can do instant payouts for a small extra fee.

  • Bank payouts go to a local currency account where supported; otherwise, PayPal in USD. There’s a 7-day hold on new sales before they’re eligible to pay out. The payouts dashboard shows the date range, deductions, and net.

Taxes (EU/UK VAT and global sales tax)

Gumroad acts as the Merchant of Record. They collect and remit EU/UK VAT and handle sales tax worldwide for digital sales, including VAT exemption handling for buyers with valid VAT IDs.

Nice summary, Diane - thanks!

One small thing I’d add after spending too long looking at Gumroad and searching endless forum posts ... it's great for getting something live fast, but it’s a bit limited once you start caring about the customer side of things. You can grab buyer emails, but there’s not much built-in for proper email follow-up or segmentation unless you integrate another tool.

Also worth noting that the 30% "Discover" cut sounds nice, but visibility there depends a lot on existing traction - it’s not like Etsy where you can count on organic eyeballs.

Still, for testing a digital product idea, there's not much that beats the simplicity.
